“The artist wishes for good fortune through brushstrokes as if carrying out a ritual. Then, the viewer interprets the work based on one’s desire for luck,” says the artist. Kim Minsu obsessively employs the color red in his work. Red is generally the color of warmth, life, and passion, but also, traditionally the color that drives away the evil spirits.
On top of red background, the traditional symbols of affluent life - a peony that represents success, a mandarin duck for a happy marriage, a frog for wealth, and a dragon that signifies absolute power - are depicted. The motif of fortune expands to modern popular culture, featuring hero characters as well.
