BYEN,UNG-PIL born in 1970 in Jangheung, South Korea, majored in Fine Art at Dongguk Univ. Seoul. After his B.A., He did his M.A. in Fine Art at Kunstakademie Muenster. Germany, and awarded as Master Student from professor Guillaume Bijl in 2005. After his coming back to Seoul, Byeon participated as a member of artist residency held by Seoul Civic Art Museum, and now he keeps his artist career at Ganghwa island near Seoul since 2010. He participated in 16 solo exhibitions and several group exhibitions in Germany and Korea both. His artwork series consist of “Self-portrait” series where he deformed his own self portraits and depicted it in abnormal form and “Someone” series where he depicted a random person by using lines and colors. His artworks are collected by art bank at Korean National Museum of Contemporary Arts, Seoul Civic Art Museum, OCI Art Museum, and Supreme court of NRW, Germany.
변웅필은 1970년 한국 장흥에서 태어나 서울 동국대학교에서 서양화를 전공(학사)했다. 졸업후 독일 뮌스터 쿤스트아카데미(Kunstakademie Muenster. Germany)에서 순수미술로 석사 학위를 받고 professor Guillaume Bijl로부터 Master student를 수여받았다(2005). 2006년 한국으로 돌아와 서울 시립미술관에서 주관하는 레지던시에 참여했고 10년 전부터 서울 근교의 작은 섬 강화도에서 전업작가로 활동중이다. 독일과 한국에서 총 16회의 개인전과 다수의 그룹전, 아트페어에 참여했다. 그의 작업은 크게 자신의 얼굴을 일그러트려 불특정한 모습으로 표현한 자화상(Selfpotrait) 시리즈와 불특정한 인물을 선과 색면으로 표현한 한 사람(Someone) 시리즈로 대표된다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행과 서울시립미술관, OCI미술관, Supreme court of NRW, Germany 등에 소장됐다.

주로 수집되거나 일상에서 찍은 사진을 소재로 캔버스에 다시 옮기는 작업을 하고 있다. 캔버스 에 옮겨진 사진 속 대상들은 전지된 모습들이다. 그리고 사진 속 정지된 대상들을 빠르고 변화가 많은 붓질로 표현한다. 때문에 그림 이 마치 움직이는 것처럼 보이기도 하고 어느 부분에서는 형태를 짐작하기 어려울 만큼 복잡한 붓질이 모여 추상 회화와 같은 면모도 볼 수 있다. 붓질은 형 태를 따르기도 하면서 상관없이 움직이기도 한다. 붓질이 외곽선으로 인식되면서도 붓질 자체로 도 인식되기도 한다. 선택되어 그려진 이미지를 보면 사람이나 대상이 놓여있는 모습에 관심이 많은데, 이는 사진이 전하는 정보 보다 사진 자체의 조형성을 찾아내는데 집중하기 위함이다. 그러면서 서사와 거리를 두고 건조한 태도로 그려낸다. 이러한 특징을 더욱 크게 드러내기 위해 모노톤에 가까운 색감으로 그려나간다. 컬러사진보다는 흑백사진에서 조형 성이 더 두드러지듯이 회화의 조형성 역시 제한된 색감이 사용될 때 극대화된다고 생각했다. 나는 이런 특징들을 이용 해 명암의 대비를 적절히 조정하여 화면을 구성해 나간다. 그리고 그 구성에 맞춰 자유롭게 움직이는 붓질은 표현하는 대상에 기대기도, 밀어내기도 하며 일렁이는 표면을 만들어낸다.
